Mineral Processing Flow Framework
Flotation
App Introduction
What is flotation?
Before carrying out the flotation process, the ore must first be crushed and ground into fine particles. These particles are typically smaller than 0.1 millimeter (100 microns). However, in certain cases, particles finer than 7–10 microns are required.
Flotation is a mineral separation process conducted in an aqueous medium. Ground ore is mixed with water to form a slurry, after which surfactants or collectors are added to render the target minerals hydrophobic. This process relies on differences in the surface properties of the minerals and the gangue. By using specific reagents to make the target mineral surfaces hydrophobic, these hydrophobic particles adhere to air bubbles introduced into the system and are collected as froth, while the wetted particles remain in the slurry.
If the particles are sufficiently dispersed, the separation efficiency improves, which can be achieved by grinding the ore. The particle recovery rate increases as particle size decreases, reaching a maximum before beginning to decline again.
Key point
The mechanical device keeps the slurry in motion, preventing excessive turbulence.
Contact between bubbles and particles in the shear zone between the rotor and stator
The powerful shear force generates sufficient energy to overcome the resistance and enable fine particles to break through.
Energy barrier of the water film on the bubble
The challenge of flotation lies in maintaining the continuous movement of the froth.
Ensure high recovery rates or achieve the highest concentrate grade.
Flotation machine types
Mechanical flotation cell
Mechanical flotation cells use an impeller to circulate the pulp, keeping the solids suspended in the slurry and drawing in sufficient air to generate bubbles. These cells can be classified as aerated, self-aerating (self‑induced aeration), or pressurized/pneumatic types. The most common designs are the Denver cell and the Wemco cell.
