EH Industrial Heat Pump

An industrial heat pump is a device that transfers heat from a lower-temperature heat source to a higher-temperature heat sink. Its operating principle is the same as that of a residential heat pump, but it is specifically designed for larger-scale, more robust applications in industrial settings.

Atlas Copco’s heat pumps are designed to be reliable, highly efficient, and easy to operate and maintain. They can also be integrated with other Atlas Copco products—such as air compressors, chillers, and energy recovery systems—to create a low‑carbon utility room, thereby optimizing plant energy efficiency.

Industrial heat pump
Industrial heat pumps can deliver significant benefits in terms of energy efficiency, environmental protection, and economic competitiveness, particularly when coupled with waste heat from industrial compressors.
Industrial compressors are widely used across various industries, including chemical, petrochemical, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and metalworking. They generate substantial waste heat, which is typically discharged into the atmosphere or released into cooling water systems. This waste heat represents a valuable energy resource that can be recovered and reused by industrial heat pumps.

Industrial Heat Pump Instructions

An industrial heat pump is a device that transfers heat from a low-temperature heat source to a high-temperature heat sink, using a refrigerant as the working fluid. By utilizing waste heat or renewable electricity as input, industrial heat pumps can reduce industrial energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Working principle of industrial heat pumps
An industrial heat pump consists of four main components: the evaporator, the compressor, the condenser, and the expansion valve. The refrigerant circulates through these components in a closed loop, undergoing phase changes and temperature variations.
The evaporator absorbs heat from a low-temperature heat source—such as waste heat, ambient air, or water—and vaporizes the refrigerant. The compressor raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant vapor. The condenser releases heat to a high-temperature heat sink—such as process water, steam, or air—and condenses the refrigerant. The expansion valve reduces the pressure and temperature of the liquid refrigerant and returns it to the evaporator.

Scope of Supply for Industrial Heat Pumps

Technological Advantages
• Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
Compared with fossil-fuel–based systems, industrial heat pumps can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping to mitigate the sector’s impact on global warming and climate change.
• Requires very little floor space
Our industrial heat pumps feature a compact design, occupy minimal floor space, and are easy to install in tight spaces.
• Reduced air pollution
Burning fossil fuels releases harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide, whereas industrial heat pumps do not burn fossil fuels, thereby reducing air pollution from heating and cooling systems. This helps improve air quality and public health in surrounding communities.
• Reduced water consumption
Industrial heat pumps use air or water as the heat source or heat sink, rather than water in evaporative cooling towers or boilers, thereby reducing water consumption in heating and cooling systems. This helps conserve water resources and alleviate water‑use pressures across the industry.
